PERIODONTICS

WHO CAN BE AFFECTED BY PERIODONTAL DISEASE?

Periodontal disease can be present in each patient who do not observe a good teeth cleaning and who have an individual predisposition to the disease.
Other factors, such as smoking and diabetes, can promote the disease.

IS PERIODONTITIS GENETIC?

Periodontal disease is not a hereditary disease. The main cause of periodontal disease is the accumulation of bacterial plaque on teeth surfaces.
However, recent international clinical studies have shown the inheritance of some predisposing factors.
About 30% of the population may be genetically susceptible to periodontal disease. However, this does not mean that periodontal disease can not be treated: all forms of periodontitis can be definitively treated by the periodontist and be eradicated.

CAN I TRANSMIT MY PERIODONTITIS TO OTHERS?

Periodontal disease can be transmitted from parents to children and between members of the same family. Periodontopathogenic bacteria (those responsible for periodontitis) are transmitted through saliva.
For this reason, the treatment of periodontitis can involve entire families. If a family member has periodontitis all family members should undergo periodontal specialist examination.
